How drug addiction leads to other crimes

On Behalf of | Jan 4, 2019 | Criminal Defense |

There is a clear link between addiction and actual drug crimes, and the understanding of this link in the courts is growing all the time. It’s not hard to argue that a person who gets arrested for illegal drugs may have a better chance of ceasing that criminal activity with rehabilitation and treatment than they would with jail time or fines. After all, it is the addiction that causes them to break the law.

However, it is important to note that drug addiction can also lead to a whole host of related crimes. Experts have even called some of these activities a “necessary way of life” for many addicts. These crimes could include:

  • Larceny
  • Theft
  • Shoplifting
  • Robbery
  • Embezzlement
  • Burglary
  • Fraud
  • White collar crimes

The issue here is that a drug addiction is expensive. Many addicts, even those who are relatively high-functioning and still have an income, need extra money to fuel this addiction. They may turn to illegal activity when desperation strikes.

For instance, as a man with an office job becomes more and more addicted to narcotics, he may need larger amounts of drugs to satisfy him, due to his increased tolerance. Soon, the need outweighs his income. Then he realizes that he can take money out of a company account and cover it up by altering the paperwork. It’s not something he would ever do normally, but he may do it when he needs a fix and has no other means of additional income.

As you can see, drug addiction can have many ramifications. It is important for those facing criminal charges to understand all their legal options. An experienced criminal law attorney can help identify various avenues of defense that may be available.
