Man gets his 7th DUI in Maryland

On Behalf of | Aug 10, 2018 | Drunk Driving |

A man in Maryland is now facing DUI charges for the seventh time after he was arrested by police in West Ocean City. He was driving down Route 50 at the time.

According to the Maryland State Police, the man was initially pulled over for reckless driving. He was in a Hyundai Santa Fe, heading east, and at least three different people observed the way he was driving and called the authorities. One person told the police that the man had come close to running into a pair of other vehicles.

Officers responded to the area, located the car and allegedly watched the driver commit a handful of traffic violations. That gave them reason to stop him, which they did.

The man behind the wheel was 59 years old, and police reported that he is from Trappe. When they talked to him, they noticed “several indicators” that made it appear as if he was driving while under the influence. They then had him take field sobriety tests, which he failed. They arrested him on DUI charges at that point.

As they looked into his record, they discovered that he had previously been convicted of driving under the influence a full six times. Those convictions all happened in Maryland. He is now facing his seventh DUI charge, along with charges for negligent driving, and police are holding him without bond.

Since DUI ramifications tend to get stiffer the more convictions someone has on their record, being arrested this many times means penalties could be severe. It is very important for anyone facing accusations to fully understand their legal rights.
