A man convicted of killing 5 in a DUI accident is captured

On Behalf of | May 19, 2017 | Drunk Driving |

A man who was set to be sentenced on Friday, May 12, 2017 in a drunk driving case was captured the following Monday in Suitland at an Allentown Road hotel. During the short time he was on the lam, Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office deputies were able to distribute wanted posters for the man throughout the entire D.C. metro tri-state area.

While on the run, law enforcement was able to learn from his affiliates that he intended to leave the D.C. area. A significant debate emerged between the prosecution and defense as to why the man was not able to be tracked down using the GPS monitoring device he had previously been equipped with.

As for the DUI he was set to have been sentenced for, it had taken place back on Oct. 10, 2014 in Oxon Hill. The accident had occurred around 9:40 p.m., at the intersection of Livingston Terrace and Livingston Road.

The defendant had been driving at least 70 mph when he struck the victims’ stopped Acura. It was later determined that not only was he driving on a suspended license at the time, but his blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was 0.14, almost twice Maryland’s legal limit.

That accident claimed the lives of two sisters, 34- and 32-years-old respectively, a 21-year-old family friend and two young siblings, aged 1 and 13. Only the defendant and the driver of the Acura survived the crash.

As the family waited in the courtroom for the man’s sentencing that Friday, they expressed their dismay over the fact that the judge in the case had released the man on a $100,000 bond in the first place. The defendant, after all, had pleaded guilty to five separate charges of negligent manslaughter in the case on March 28 .

Now that he’s in back in custody for good, his sentencing in the fatal drunk driving case will move forward. As the situation currently stands, the defendant faces up to a total of 50 years of imprisonment for the charges he’s been convicted of — 10 years for each life he took.

If you’re facing DUI or vehicular homicide charges, then the guidance of an experienced Clinton, Maryland, drunk driving attorney can provide may prove invaluable in your defense.
