Maryland one state targeted by cybercrime

On Behalf of | Jun 5, 2014 | White Collar Crimes |

Computer fraud affects many in Maryland and other states. A popular teen USA has been on the news talking about her experience with “creepware.” a nickname that has been given to a group of malware that has found its way into people’s homes and bedrooms via their computers.

It was a story of near-science fiction that made the news as a young lady in the public eye described her computer system had been hacked, and her predator had published her photos. The hackers use a software called Blackshades.

After a global investigation lasting two years, officials with the Federal Bureau of Investigation finally arrested the co-creator of Blackshades in Moldova. Other arrests took place in the eastern part of the United States. Charges included computer hacking and access device fraud.

There are many ways remote administration tools are used. They are relatively inexpensive to buy and have been used in cases of bank fraud and extortion. Information is available from anyone’s computer, including hard drives. RATs can turn on your web cam.

If you have malware on your computer, it may have a mind of its own. If installed with a RAT, it may be subject to allegations of computer fraud. People believed to be involved with their use can be sentenced to jail time.

RAT’s have been tracked from Maryland to California. Maryland is just one state that has been affected by crimes like computer fraud.

If you have been accused of identity theft, computer fraud or face criminal charges related to a federal crime involving a computer, you may find the guidance and advice offered by a federal criminal defense attorney very helpful.
