Maryland dentist agrees to plea bargain on drug charges

On Behalf of | Jun 25, 2014 | Drug Charges |

A one-time Maryland dentist received a plea bargain on federal drug charges. He was also facing charges of unlawful sexual activity. The man has reportedly arranged a deal with prosecutors and has thus postponed his trial, which was to start in Baltimore.

The former dentist, who practiced in Hagerstown, pleaded guilty to one count of illegal distribution of the controlled substance oxycodone. In exchange, prosecutors agreed to dismiss a second drug charge. They also agreed to suspend charges regarding an alleged illicit sexual encounter, in which he was accused of exposing himself to an underage minor.

The Germantown man’s dental license was reportedly removed last year. Depending on the outcome of his upcoming hearing, which is scheduled for August, he could serve as many as 20 years in prison.

While agreeing to a plea bargain, the dentist still faces other charges. He will continue to face civil charges for solicitation of sex and illicit sexual activity with an underage person in the waiting room of his dental office.

Maryland has strict guidelines on the distribution and use of controlled substances, such as the one involved in this case. Federal drug charges can also carry severe penalties.

It is paramount for a defendant who is considering a plea bargain, whether for misdemeanor or felony charges, understand how a that process works. The outcome can affect the rest of your life. Make sure you speak with an experienced Maryland legal professional who can explain your rights to you, thoroughly investigate your case and work to find ways to get charges dismissed or reduced.
