Maryland substitute teacher accused of sex abuse, child porn

| Mar 12, 2014 | Federal Crimes |

A Maryland substitute teacher in the Howard County school district already arrested for child pornography charges this year has had additional child porn and a separate sex abuse charge added after his recent indictment.

The indictment accuses the 43-year-old Columbia man of sexually abusing and photographing a 16-year-old girl last summer and of distributing images of a prepubescent girl engaging in sex acts in December of last year.

The man had been employed as a substitute teacher at a local middle school since October of 2013 when police allegedly traced evidence of child pornography from his home computer and also to one of the school system’s computers.

Police concede that there is no evidence any of the confiscated images were of students being taught by the defendant or even in the school system.

The indictment indicates two separate computers at different locations were used to upload the pornographic images. One computer is allegedly in use at the school and the other is in the home of the defendant.

Certainly such accusations are serious matters. In the case of a teacher facing such charges, they will be life-changing even without a conviction, as now his livelihood is at stake. The long-term consequences if convicted will likely include prison time, and even if acquitted, the man will likely have to find another field of employment.

Retaining the services of an experienced Maryland criminal defense attorney is vital in cases such as this one. An experienced attorney knows how to mount a vigorous defense and launch a series of evidentiary challenges, especially concerning access to a computer that could easily be logged onto by others working in the school system.
