A Capitol Heights, Maryland, man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder of both his girlfriend and her unborn child, after he set fire to her apartment on the morning of Friday, Sept. 8.
Prince George's County dispatch first received a call to come to the Addison Chapel Apartments, located at 1400 Elkwood Lane, shortly before 11:47 a.m. that day. The caller suspected that someone had attempted to set fire to a second-floor unit in the victim's three-story complex.
When fire crews arrived at the scene, smoke could be seen billowing from both the second and third stories of the building. In entering one of the affected apartments, they found a pregnant female who appeared to have suffered extensive burns.
One of the woman's neighbors had reported they'd first become aware of the woman's injuries when she knocked on their door seeking their help. When they opened their door, they found the woman smoldering after apparently having been set on fire.
The woman was stabilized before being whisked away to MedStar Washington Medical Center and their burn unit. Once she arrived there, her baby girl was delivered. Mom and baby were reportedly listed as being in critical condition following the birth.
Apparently, the young female victim was able to make a call to her mother in the District of Columbia to give her a heads up that her boyfriend might have been coming to her home to also inflict harm upon her. He, however, proceeded to the city and turned himself in to police instead.
The 34-year-old defendant has since been arraigned on arson, attempted murder and assault charges. Prince George's County is currently seeking to have him extradicted to where the crime occurred so he can face trial.
If you've been accused of assault, battery, murder or some type of violent offense, then a Clinton, Maryland, criminal defense attorney can advise you of the penalties you face in your case. He or she can also help you begin building a defense against the charges.
