Crimes against property: Things to know

Committing a crime against property – such as burglary, theft or shoplifting – can lead to serious punishments including time in jail.

Since you don't want to deal with any punishment related to your charge, it's best to learn more about what happened and how to defend yourself. This is particularly true if you have been falsely or excessively accused.

The severity of a burglary or theft charge is based largely on the nature in which the goods were stolen, as well as the value. For example, there is a big difference between shoplifting a $10 article of clothing and holding a person at gunpoint as a means of stealing his or her vehicle.

Some of the most common charges related to crimes against property include:

  • Burglary (first, second, third or fourth degree)
  • Grand theft
  • Petit theft
  • Shoplifting
  • Robbery
  • Breaking into a motor vehicle

At our law firm, we realize that every case is different. We also realize that the accused wants nothing more than to put this incident in the past with minimal damage. This is where we step in, review the charges and make suggestions on how to best move forward.

You need to understand everything associated with your crime, including your legal rights and the best way to defend yourself in court.

You don't want to be convicted of any crime, as this could lead to a fine, imprisonment and/or the loss of your job. Crimes against property, regardless of the type, are very serious. Make sure you know what you are doing at every step, as this will give you the confidence needed to push forward.
