Consider your health when arrested for a DUI

If you've been arrested for a DUI in Maryland, one of the key things that you should think about afterward is your own health. This can play a big role in why an arrest was made and why you were pulled over in the first place. Big questions to ask include the following:

-- Had you been taking any medications, such as those for sinus infections, allergies, or a cold?

-- Were you feeling dizzy and lightheaded because of the ailment?

-- Had you taken any drugs that you were only able to get with a prescription? If so, what were they? When did you take them and what side effects could they have?

-- Was a sickness making you less mentally composed at the time of the arrest? For example, maybe you'd been dealing with a pounding headache all day, caused by sinus pressure, and it was hard for you to think straight.

-- Did you have trouble focusing when the officer was talking to you because you were feeling sick?

-- What time was it? How long had you been awake at that point? How well had you been able to sleep for the last few nights, since you weren't well?

-- Were you feeling weak and exhausted?

As you can imagine, these things can all make you appear drunk to an officer, even when you haven't had much to drink. They could also impact your ability to drive perfectly, which could have led the officer to pull you over the in first place. The police may assume you're drunk because they deal with DUI incidents so often, but it's important to know your rights if sickness and health complications were to blame.
