Maryland drunk drivers targeted over Labor Day weekend

Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer, and many Marylanders celebrate by taking a trip to the shore, going to a friend's house for a barbeque or taking a drive to visit family. Maryland State Police troopers were out in full force from the Friday before Labor Day through the holiday itself this year to try to catch drunk drivers and generally work to keep the state's roads safer. A drunk driving enforcement team called S.P.I.D.R.E patrolled parts of Prince George's County that have been the sites of DUI-related crashes in the past.

The numbers are still coming in, but numerous drivers were stopped, cited and/or arrested by law enforcement officers in special enforcement operations and sobriety checkpoints throughout Maryland. So far, the figures indicate that officers made more than 8,000 traffic stops, writing almost 5,500 citations. They arrested 126 people for drunk driving. In Prince George's County, the drunk driving enforcement team, as part of the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, arrested 20 drivers for DUI.

One group of state troopers covered the Route 50 corridor, which runs from Chesapeake Bay to Ocean City. Another group worked the I-95/I-495 corridor from the Maryland/Delaware border to the Maryland/Virginia border. There were no fatal or even serious car accidents in these areas over the holiday weekend.

While this level of law enforcement isn't possible on a regular basis, you never know when you may encounter a police officer while on the road. If you've been drinking or have drugs in your system, you could find yourself facing a DUI charge.

It's essential that you take a DUI charge seriously. A drunk driving conviction can result in a license suspension, fines and jail time. It can hamper your ability to get to your job and impact your chances of getting a new one in the future. An experienced criminal defense attorney can work to challenge the evidence and to mitigate the penalties you face if convicted.
