Three arrested during DUI crackdown in Maryland

The police department in Talbot County, Maryland, decided to crack down on drivers who were suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol while operating their vehicles. This program netted three different arrests.

Police say that one of those arrests was made because a motorist was found to have illegal drugs. The other two were made when drivers were thought to be drunk behind the wheel.

To find the drivers, the police set up a checkpoint. It was located at the intersection where Station Road and Route 33 cross, and it ran on a Friday night this month, from nine in the evening until eleven. It was manned by officers from the Maryland State Police and by officers from the Talbot County Sheriff's Office.

After the checkpoint ended, police continued their work by running a saturation patrol. This lasted until two in the morning on Saturday. The police called the entire thing "Checkpoint Strikeforce." They reportedly searched as many as 148 cars during that time.

Interestingly, the arrests were not made at the checkpoint itself. When the three drivers were originally stopped, police did not take any of them aside to do more field tests to see if they were under the influence. The roving squad cars that followed the checkpoint simply caught all three drivers while they were out on Route 33.

Those accused of drunk driving, whether they were caught at a checkpoint or by a mobile unit, must know what rights they have. This is especially true if they do not believe that the charges against them were justified. It is essential for a defendant to have a full understanding of his or her rights, whether a person decides to plead guilty or not.
