Woman charged with arson in connection to Oxon Hill fire

Committing a crime can often have serious consequences. Whatever the charges might be, a person who is facing criminal charges has a right to create a solid defense against the charges being brought. One of the most obvious steps in creating such a defense is getting advice from a legal professional. George County readers might recall a fire that took place in November. Recently, a person was charged with allegedly setting that fire.

A 59-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with allegedly setting fire to an Alice Avenue apartment building. The fire happened on Nov. 7. The woman has been charged with first-degree arson, second-degree arson and first-degree malicious burning. She is being held on $100,000 bond.

The case is strange to investigators because the vast majority of accused arsonists are men. This could come into play in the woman's defense as arsonists often have underlying issues that cause them to start fires. So far, no reason or motive has been released with regard to why the woman allegedly set the fire. The incident is still under investigation. There was no report of whether the woman has any previous brushes with the law or connection to other fires in the area.

In a case such as this, a person could face serious penalties in the event of a conviction. According to Maryland state laws, if convicted, the woman could face up to 55 years in jail. It is paramount that anyone in this position collaborate with an experienced legal professional so the charges can be vigorously fought. Also a legal professional could have the ability to work with prosecutors to possibly have charges reduced, depending on the circumstances.
